Each poet has their own individual style of writing. Some poets use a lot of allusion while others use similes or ballads. However many use repetition. Repetition is the recurrence of stressed and unstressed sounds in poetry. Depending on how sounds are arranged, the repetition of a poem may may be fast or slow, choppy or smooth. In this particular poem, "O Captain! My Captain!" By Walt Whitman, repetition is used all throughout. In the first stanza, the words, our and heart are repeated. In the second stanza, for you, is repeated. In all three stanzas, "O captain, My captain, and fallen cold and dead, are three repeated phrases. These phrases are repeated to emphasize the importance of the captain and how he is now dead.
I chose to share this writing piece because I was already working on it and decided to use this for my blog. This prompt stood out to me because in class we are annotating poems. Like I said repetition is used in different ways. This blog was somewhat difficult because I didn't know what poem to write about.
