Night Chapter 2 blog post
In this chapter Elie started to lose his faith. Before the German people (the Nazi people) took Elie and his family to the internment camps, Elie was a very faithful kid. He started to lose his faith when he saw children die and he barley flinched at the sight. It scares me how heartless and cruel people can be. I mean if they can throw truck loads of babies in fire then what else are they capable of? And I can't believe Hitler. He totally lost his faith when someone on his train (to the camps) kept saying there is a fire outside, which there wasn't. Instead of felling bad for her, he is glad when they beat her and she stops yelling about a fire.
In the camps people try to help Elie and his father say alive. The first man had been in there much longer. He gave potentially life saving advice. He told Elie and his father to lie about theIr age. So Elie said he was 15 and his father said he was forty. If they didn't lie they probably would have been thrown into a fire or something else, something worse. Do those people have faith? Or do they think the war is going to end soon? Or are they just good people? Anyway so these people help Elie and his father stay safe. At one point there was a SS guard who wanted Elie's gold tooth. When Elie said he had to ask his father the SS guard gave him until tomorrow to chose to give him the tooth or not. Elie's father didn't want him to give up the gold tooth. I wonder why? I mean it's not like they can go down the street to "We Buy Gold" and cash it in. It could be quite possible that, because they had to give up all their valuables, that this one the last thing form home. When Elie told the SS guard that he is going to keep his gold tooth the SS guard decided to indirectly punish Elie by beating his father every chance he got. Elie then tried to teach his father to march in beat so the guard would stop beating his father. But Elie's father made little progress so Elie gave up his tooth. In return the SS guard would sometimes sneak extra soup for Elie. Is it possible that this is an act of kindness? Giving someone more soup then your supposed to have is nice and all but the SS guard did beat his father for the tooth.
In the camp Elie had to count and sort out things. That's where he met someone who I guess was probably the closest thing to a friend he has. However, they didn't speak to each other because they spoke different languages. Later after the war they ran into each other and it turns out that she could speak German but didn't because she lied on her form. I don't know why I included this incident in my blog post but for some reason it feels important.
