Night chapter three blog post
In night chapter three seemed like for the most part people had lot their faith. Elie encountered many people who had lost their faith. And even more who lost hope. Although some Jews tried to be pessimistic. Like Akiba Drumer. He "AKIBA DRUMER HAS LEFT US, a victim of the selection. Lately, he had been wandering among us, his eyes glazed, telling everyone how weak he was: “I can’t go on … It’s over …" Akiba the Drumer was a very religious guy. In the camp he prayed often and hoped God would save them. In this chapter he just wanted to die that's why he purposely failed the selection: because he didn't want to live. In all honestly I know I probably shouldn't think this way but I can't blame him. Living in those horrible conditions, enduring those terrible beatings, and practically starving. I mean there's only so much someone can take. We don't even know how long he was in the Nazi camps. Would you have lost your faith? How would you have responded?
Earlier in this chapter three people were hanged while everyone watched. One was just a child. When they hung him he was too light so he suffered for hours befriend he died. What made it worse was that everyone was forced to watch him die. This made all the onlookers feel sick. Speaking of sick, Elie's foot was swollen from doing hard labor work in the freezing snow. Elie went to the doctor and was treated very well. At first the doctor was going to amputate his foot because he thought Elie had an infection. It turns out that Elie's foot was not infected, the bottom of his foot was just full of puss or something. So after The puss was removed form Elie's foot he was to stay in the infirmary for two weeks to let it heal completely. But then there was word that another selection would take place.
Elie's father and Elie were going to stay together no matter what. Which personally I thought was a great idea. Especially because most of those families and friends that separated never saw each other again. Anyway, the doctor was kind enough to write a fake medical note for Elie's father so they could stay together in the infirmary. Although one of the sick guys in the infirmary kept telling Elie that as soon as the selection comes along they will be the first to die since they are already sick. Elie and his father believe him so they join the overs in the selection. I just relised that if you are reading this but have not read the book then you might be confused as to what the selection is. So I'll tell you, the selection is a test and if you are weak they will write your number down and you will have to do another selection and the weakest ones will die. Elie's father was written down for the selection but then Elie ran after him and all of the SS guards got distracted and a few of the weak, including Elie's father moved to where the healthy people were. I think this is pretty brave of Elie because he could have died and if the people got caught them maybe their lives would be in danger too.
